Since the first sentient being, all organisms have strived to improve, to make life better for themselves. In the human context this meant to hunt better to gather better, in other words to improve ourselves in order to better our chances of survival. This constant desire for growrth has led to the notion that the only way for growth is to experience hardship. However I feel differently and instead feel that practise, mimicry and self discovery are also avenues for growth.
The notion that adversity is an avenue for growth is not untrue. Going through adversity is often a consequence caused by a decision made by us or people around us. These problems are in fact reports on what these actions have caused and from these reports we learn what was done wrong and could have been improved and what was right. We then carry with us what we have learnt and bring these lessons when making future decisions, applying what we have learnt so the mistakes are not repeated. This whole process of knowing what went wrong and learning from them is known as "growth". A prime example of this would be blah blah blah.
However there are other ways of to experience growth. One such avenue is through practise. Practise is in fact essential for growth. Knowing what went wrong is insufficient for growth. It is important that we understand what went wrong and then apply this knowledge into our future endeavours. This process being known as practise. As we practise we realise our flaws and improve again making it a cycle of growth. This is seen in blah blah. All this is only acquired via growth by constant practise.
Thirdly another form of growth would be via mimicry. Though the term "mimicry" generally gives people an impression of being sneaky and of theft of ideas. However in essence mimicry is what guides us along the path of growth. We copy those who are better than us, learn their tricks, memorise their patterns. We then fuse this with our own knowledge and attain new levels in whatever disciplines we may be pursuing. The simplest and most obvious example being blah blah.
Lastly the hardest form of growth though the most valuable are those achieved by self-discovery. "Don't follow trails left by others, but instead blaze a trail and let others follow." This form of discovery is the one that opens up new vistas of knowledge by daring to go places where others have not. Though potentially disastrous, the rewards are well worth the effort and sacrifice. This growth via self discovery is what is required to keep humanity moving forward as it generates new knowledge. Blah Blah blah
In conclusion though adversity motivates growth, it cannot stand alone. Though practise and mimicry can help, they are not sufficient. Hence all four are not separate entities but complements of one another. "Man's mind once stretched by a new idea will never return to its original dimensions." And that in essence is what growth is really about.
